Interactive Product Design Studio (DECO3200) - The University of Sydney

[Project Overview]

In this unit, we were tasked with iteratively conceptualizing, designing, and prototyping a solution that aligns with one or several of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals identified by the United Nations. We were required to consider both the social and technical aspects of our concepts, while also being aware of potential sociocultural resistances to novel ideas. The project encouraged us to take a creative, provocative, or utilitarian design approach, challenging social norms when appropriate. Additionally, our final concepts needed to be interactive, ensuring they effectively engage users while contributing to a sustainable future.

[Aim]

For our project, we chose to focus on SDG Goal 12, specifically Target 12.3, which aims to reduce food waste at the consumer level.

[Background Research]

Based off of our exploratory research, we utilized systems mapping to discover the relationships between the surrounding systems and stakeholders that existed within our problem space (Acaroglu, 2017). From this, we decided to focus our research our research and problem statement on consumers since they were a primary contributor to food wastage and were at the intersection of not-for-profits, the environment, businesses, and the government.

After defining our primary problem statement, which was based on thorough background research and the analysis of various precedents addressing food waste issues, we translated our main goals into a clear research plan.

Breaking our goals into a research plan helped develop our research questions by providing a clear structure and direction. Each question identified a specific aspects of the problem space we wanted to explore.

After developing our main research questions, we began exploring various research methods and ultimately selected our top three: Interviews, Questionnaires, and Online Ethnography.

Based on our findings, we revised our problem statement to narrow down the scope our research. In particular, we chose to focus on addressing grocery over-shopping and pantry organization to reduce wastage.

The final UI features four main colors: two shades of green, along with white and black. Green was chosen for its association with organic, fresh, and food-related themes, as well as its representation of order—the principle Plenti aims to promote (Cherry, 2023). Black was selected for the text, as it ensures strong readability against the white background, which serves as the overall backdrop of the UI.

Expand user-testing

To improve user testing for Plenti, we will expand participant demographics to include families, working professionals, and older adults, alongside students. This will provide more diverse insights. Additionally, increasing testing frequency throughout the design process will help gather iterative feedback for continuous refinement based on real user experiences.

Additionally, we will integrate a voice assistance feature to ensure the interface is navigable without touch interaction for users with impairments.
