PULP Magazine
PULP Magazine
PULP is an Arts and Culture magazine supported by the University of Sydney Union (USU), with a focus on the engaging, niche, and, novel. Based in The University of Sydney, PULP is a magazine that platforms the stories of all young people in Eora, Dharug, and beyond.
[My Role]
As one of three editorial designers on the team, I was tasked with designing magazine spreads for each issue, creating social media content, and developing promotional posters for Pulp events. I also contributed to social media strategies, ensuring visual consistency across platforms to align with the magazine's identity. I applied skills in layout design, typography, visual composition, and art direction to create tactile, modular designs that evolved with each issue. Through collaboration and creative direction, we ensured the designs aligned with the magazine's experimental identity, balancing aesthetics, legibility, and functionality. Additionally, I worked on revamping the Pulp website, adapting the design to reflect the magazine’s content.

[Brand Identity]
The brand identity at Pulp Magazine was built around creativity, inclusivity, and student-driven expression. We aimed to position ourselves as a platform for diverse voices within the University of Sydney community, offering a space for cultural commentary and personal exploration. Our identity was grounded in independence and experimentation, encouraging individuality, subversion, and bold ideas. We sought to foster a community of students who challenged norms and expressed themselves authentically. Through constantly shifting content and design styles, we created an inclusive space where all perspectives were celebrated, making Pulp an integral part of the student experience at USyd.

[Visual Style]
The design style of Pulp Magazine is tactile and modular, with layouts that shift and evolve. It often features juxtaposed elements, combining bold typography with striking visuals in ways that create contrast and tension. The aesthetic pulls from post-internet influences, incorporating digital collage, glitch effects, and layers of textures. The overall feel is fragmented and experimental, with a fluid, dynamic quality that reflects the contemporary nature of the content.
We chose this design approach to reflect the constantly evolving nature of student life and the diverse range of voices we aim to represent. This visual style allowed us to experiment with space and structure, creating a unique reading experience that challenged traditional magazine formats.
